The Project

The aim of this project is to increase the confidence of year 7 students in using ICT for the first time at secondary school and to create a link between some of the skills they have developed at KS2 and the KS3 National Strategy syllabus. The 4 lessons are set out as an introduction to the KS3 National Strategy Unit 7.6 – Control and Monitoring and are planned to be taught to year 7 at the beginning of September.

This project also aims to help to deal with the students' differing levels of ICT knowledge and skill caused by an intake of students from 11 different feeder primary schools. The project will consolidate prior knowledge gained by some students at primary school who have used the turtle robot before and develop an understanding of control without requiring any previous experience. There will be differentiated tasks to support those students who have had little ICT experience at KS2 and extension tasks for those who are more experienced.

The project will include programming activities using MS Logo where students learn how to type in commands to control the turtle around the screen, draw out their initials and shapes, and design games for each other to complete and evaluate. All of the lessons will be prepared as PowerPoint presentations to be used on an interactive whiteboard.
