Working with Stand -Alones

Stand alones can be used as a research tool along with other resources when pupils are undertaking an investigation. If the computer is connected to the internet, this can work very well. It is not a good idea just to let pupils search for information without guidelines. Spreadsheets are a good way of collection and collating evidence.
Teachers with moderate to good ICT skills can produce a PowerPoint presentation where information is flashed up on a computer a screen at a time. Prepare a worksheet steering them in the right direction and set a strict time limit for each pupil. This kind of activity works best with group work. Similarly, information can be collected and put onto a database by pupils. The teacher would just have to set up the blank fields to start with.
Very often stand alone PCs are used for word processing or perhaps looking at a CD ROM. It doesn’t have to be that way.
