Effectively Using
Word Processing in History

All too often word processing is used to type up assignments, particularly coursework. But word processing can be, in fact, used far more effectively to enhance pupils’ History and ICT skills.

Time lines – cut and paste facilities can be used to sequence events into a timeline. This can be a good introduction to a topic.

When the sequencing has been completed, pupils can be asked to categorise the events by colour coding them, e.g. political events in green, economic in red, social in blue and cultural in orange. For example, take a look at the document Nationalist vs Unionist.doc.

NOTE: You can actually buy timeline software - http://www.softease.com/timeline.htm

Organising Text – Word processing can make the task of digesting complicated text much easier.
