Transparencies

Both GIF and PNG image file types support transparencies. Notice how the apple in the Teachnet logo seems to stick out of the image and lie across the background of the page. The logo is a GIF image with a transparent section - it doesn't matter what colour the page is - the background of the page will show through.

Fireworks uses PNG images by default. That's great for making images with transparent sections for using in PowerPoint but you have to view web images in Firefox or Explorer 7 if you want the transparencies to work.
