Four exercises that can be used within the context of KS3 Design & Technology to show how the molecular properties of a substance affect its material properties.

Introduction

This project shows examples of how the molecular properties of a material dictate its overall material properties and how we use our knowledges of these properties in the course of designing. The content corresponds to a KS3 description which states that;

“ pupils should apply their knowledge of the characteristics of materials when creating solutions” (Key Stage 3 Strategy, Making high quality products sub skill)

The project consists of four activities that cover the breadth of the technology syllabus, both the current one and that due to be introduced in Sept 2008. Each activity looks at one particular molecular property we can utilise in technology, demonstrates this to pupils at a molecular level and gives a practical activity that supports the learning.

Each activity has a PowerPoint presentation which can be used to deliver the activity and a guide sheet to take teachers through them
