Games and quizzes

  Wordsearch online

An online version of the worksheet favourite. Best used by pupils on individual computers.

  Noughts and crosses online

Works very well on an IWB with the class divided into teams or pairs of students working together on a computer.

  Matching pairs
Pupils click on two cards to try and find English and French pairs. The cards are numbered so that pupils in class can call out two numbers if your whiteboard is not interactive.

  Jigword

Pupils can see ten English and ten French words to be matched together. Works well in a whole class situation or by individual pupils on computers. There are twenty numbers saved within this game, although only ten appear at a time, so that each time you click ‘new game’ a different set of numbers appear. Good on IWBs or on individual computers.

  Hangman

A fun computer version of the blackboard favourite. Works well on IWBs or on individual computers.

  Tetris

For pupils to practise spelling the words for numbers against the clock. Also good for developing typing skills! Suitable for individual pupils on computers only. A fast-paced, very competitive game. Pupils like to try and beat each others’ high scores. I check when they tell me what their score is, make a big fuss over a good score and write their name and score on the board. I announce new high scores as the lesson goes on.

  Tiletap

Pupils have to click on letters to spell out the French words. The English meanings are displayed on the screen. Suitable only for individual pupils on computers.

  Letter drop

Pupils click on letters as they pass across the top of the screen to spell a word for a number. Another fast-paced, against the clock competitive game. Only suitable for individual pupils on computers.

  Wordweb

An excellent game for pupils to reinforce their knowledge of the spellings. Good on an IWB and on individual computers. An English word is displayed and pupils have to click on the letters to spell that word in French. Includes high scores for the competitive element in your class!

  Speedword

A fast-paced, against the clock spelling game. Best on individual computers, but could be used on an IWB too.

Multiple choice ...

  Quiz

This multiple choice quiz can be used on an IWB or by pupils individually. There is a time limit facility, but it can also be used with no time limit. One correct answer and three wrong answers for each question. Pupils see an English word for a number, and four French words. There are fifteen questions in total.

  Snakes

This is the same quiz as the one above, but in the format of a snakes and ladders game. It can be played on an IWB or on individual PCs. Can be played by one – four players or teams.

  Triple

This is also the same quiz, but in the format of a kind of Connect Four game (for all those who remember Connect Four!). Pupils can play against each other individually or in teams to get three of their red or yellow counters in a row.
