Introduction

In this unit students explore the culture of the Dogon tribe in West Africa and investigate ceremonial mask and costume making. They use this information to develop independent skills at researching, developing their own ideas, making a mask and evaluating the outcome. They develop skills in using drawing materials and gain experience of working in 3-D materials. They will be asked to develop a personal response on the theme of birth, death, marriage, rite of passage, hunting, the after life and/or a theme of their own choosing.

This unit has strong links with Geography and the exploration of other cultures and beliefs found in R.E. It asks students to examine ceremonies and traditions and relate these to their own lives. The Unit focuses on student’s skills in using a range of drawing materials. They express ceremonies in their own lives through artistic expression.  It can be adapted to suit children of Key Stage 1, 2 or 3.
