About the author

Containers is intended as a development 'design and make' task for Yr 8 students in a school workshop with basic hand tools and power driven equipment. It also serves as reinforcement to the scheme the students follow in their first year of school - see the Rollerball Project which has an overlap of materials and information.

The scheme of work provides an overview of the whole project and can easily be extended or altered in the same way as the other documents, so as to extend or reduce the time taken for certain aspects of the work.

The Containers student book has been developed in Microsoft Publisher 2003 and contains a wealth of information which can be used to support homework and/or to reinforce their practical knowledge. The student book can easily be altered, added to or pages removed as necessary. It is also available in pdf format which is ideal for whiteboard display as non of the text or picture frames are visible unlike publisher and as a Power point display which can be tailored to your own specific needs.

If you have the luxury of a lazer cutter or router the practical project could easily be modified to include aspects of this work within the construction process and the student book modified to reflect this. Additionally if you have a dye sublimation setup, you could also include this in the processes as a means of decorating students' work.

I hope you find the project of interest and your students enjoy designing and making containers!
