| These ICT-based English lessons are based on preparation of the Literature poems from the AQA Anthology. These lessons focus on some of the core poems from the Armitage/Duffy selection, together with some from the Pre-1914 selection, chosen in groups of four to allow planning for a particular exam essay question.
The project follows a simple format, where the teacher first uses the four poem PowerPoints to enable the students to annotate their own copies of the AQA Anthologies, the teacher prompting further ideas and themes arising from the discussion. A step-by-step approach to an essay, based on these four poems, is then shown in a PowerPoint, stressing the P.E.E. method and taking the students through the essay stage by stage. A sample essay is also provided, which can be used for text marking or as a model template.
The unit prepares GCSE students for the poetry section of the AQA Literature examination; the mini-tutorials on the poems can be used by the teacher as the basis of or supplemental to their teaching. The students can revisit the poems in their own time, challenge themselves to try and improve on the sample essay and practice other essays using the step-by-step structure.
