With the new GCSE courses begining in September 2009, it seemed a sensible time to look at our current coursework and to adapt it so it fits the new Controlled Assessment model.

I have therefore based this unit of work on the AQA A specification for September 2009. This unit focuses on the delivery of the Controlled Assessment element, using a series of lessons on the key skills that students will need for the assessment.

Although they have been set out as Lessons 1 to 6, students may need longer in between each lesson to complete their work, therefore the lessons I have outlined should be seen as the key lessons in the 20 hours of the whole Controlled Assessment.

A successful submission of coursework involves a well-planned and resourced approach to the coursework theme. It involves more than simply taking students on a fieldtrip and asking them to write it up. And so, this unit provides a series of lessons that can be taught as is** or adapted for another teacher's own use. The resources for this unit can be found in the resources section.

** Teachers should note that the unit has been written using the Local area that students at The Appleton School currently visit. Therefore teachers wishing to use this unit for their own locality will have to change the provided resources with suitable local examples of their fieldwork location.
