Lesson 1 - What is sustainability?

Aims/objectives

To understand the principal of sustainability and how it will effect the future of the planet.

To know the importance and the difference between renewable and non renewable resources.

Lesson starter

Show starter slideshow.

Get the pupils to draw or list what they think the world will be like in another 100 years.  Feedback ideas and discuss.
Main activities

Use main slideshow to introduce the idea of sustainability.

Look at the possible outcomes – how things might change depending on how we act today.

Define renewable and non renewable resources.

Test pupils knowledge using worksheet 1.

Get pupils to think of what types of major problems we may need to solve- can link this into an introduction of the series of lessons (topics) to be covered in this unit. 

Lesson plenary

Get pupils to think why they need to think as ‘Global Citizens’ when studying sustainability.

Extension/homework

Could ask students to think of a word for each of the letters in SUSTAINABLE to sum up how they wish to see the future planet - for example, Safe, Unspoilt, Secure, etc
