Lesson 2 - Sustainable energy

Aims/objectives

To understand the role fossil fuels play in the generation of electricity.

To look at alternative forms of energy and discuss their good and bad points.

See lesson plan.

Lesson starter

Get pupils to brainstorm all the things they use in their life that are run by electricity.

Can then get them to imagine life without them!
Main activities

Use main slideshow to show how electricity is produced using coals and oil and to understand why continued production of electricity by this method is harmful to the planet.

Divide students into groups to research alternative methods of creating energy.  The presentation and worksheet 2 will provide prompts.

When complete groups need to feed back to class who will all then complete worksheet 2.

Can then hold a class discussion or debate on which is the most sustainable form of energy.

Lesson plenary

Test the pupils gained knowledge on types of energy using the Picture Board Quiz

Extension/homework

Could extend this lesson into 2 sessions – one for research with an associated homework and one for feedback and discussion.  Can also get pupils to design a poster of leaflet to promote their chosen form of alternative energy.
