This unit of work has been written to provide a series of student-centered differentiated lessons for students with special educational needs. The lessons are designed to maximize students' 'on-task' time and therefore, their learning.

This unit is suitable as part of the NVQ Level 1 course or just a unit of work. These lessons were written for year nine, but would equally serve years 8 to 10 depending on ability and prior knowledge.

There are lesson plans for each lesson and a series of Publisher worksheets/and or word cards as well as a word list for support and a tick sheet for  each student so they can assess themselves and track their progression, when they have met the lesson outcomes.

I would recommend copying worksheets onto cream [or coloured] paper to make reading easier for students with Dyslexia or 'Meares-Irlen Syndrome' [see http://www.dyslexia-test.com/color.html for more details on this].
The word cards can be copied onto different colours. Most are needed for match up activities, but some are used for sentence building and I have used different colours on the flipcharts or PowerPoints to demonstrate this.

I would recommend using envelopes to keep the cards in sets not elastic bands, which may end up having to be confiscated. I would also not go to the time and expense of laminating the cards, as laminated cards often end up worse off, when the laminate peels apart.

There is a series of online vocabulary games for use as self access or as plenaries using the interactive whiteboard. A good use of these would be for students to use as a seventh lesson in the computer suite referring to their check lists to see if they can still meet the outcomes of the unit.

I do hope that colleagues find this unit of work as successful as I have found it to be. The lesson plans and resources are available as far as possible in different formats so they can be edited and used to suit your own purposes.

Viel Spass and Gute Reise!
