As Enterprise Co-ordinator, I am always looking for ways to embed useful enterprise skills and competences within the curriculum, in addition to one off days or events. Also I have been looking to give younger students enterprise experience, rather than expecting them to suddenly ‘get it’ in Key Stages 4 and 5!
An opportunity to do this arose when my school decided to address transition issues, by having year seven students taught by one teacher for the whole day, each Monday. The purpose of the day, as well as easing transition and getting to know the individual students quickly, was to teach the students skills and competences that would improve their performance in all subject areas, for example ... research, information handling, planning, analysis of data problem solving, working to deadlines, communication, creativity and team-work!. This is delivered via six projects, one each term.
As I am one of the teachers involved in this scheme, it was an ideal opportunity to develop an enterprise project that the whole of Year 7 could take part in. It was decided that the focus of the project would be the school Christmas Fair!
