In my school, Health and Safety is obvious to everyone from the moment they enter the Design and Technology workshops. Instead of large files in the office, all users see clear instructions in the correct and safe use of tools and machines as they approach them.
Safety notices are fixed to the walls next to each machine, so that pupils see and read them before switching on the machine.
In addition, workshop procedures have been written for my school workshops and make it clear to students, our expectations for their correct and safe conduct during Design and Technology practical lessons. With a small amount of editing, they could be useful for other school use too.
The videos give instruction in the correct and safe use of machines that secondary pupils are typically allowed to use with training, without direct supervision. I have found that pupils understand at a higher level if they are sitting comfortably, watching a video, rather than standing around a machine in a large group, unable to see from the middle and back rows.
The videos are in .flv format and should start playing in your web browser when the link to them is opened. If they don't, then we suggest you download the file and play using Windows Media Player or VLC Player.
