Lesson 8

Starter

Presentation: Lord of the Flies - read aloud the scenario within the presentation of students being stranded on a desert island after a plane crash. Ask your students to close their eyes and visualise this.

Main

In groups, ask the students to discuss their reactions to the situation, using the presentation to prompt ..

  • Were they frightened?
  • Could they manage on their own?
  • What would they eat and drink?
  • How long could they survive without adult help?
  • Would it be fun, actually?
Development

Ask the students to imagine that they had to select a leader from their English class. Firstly, brainstorm the qualities a possible leader needs to have.

Then ask for up to 4/5 nominations of students and write their names on the board ... also the qualities that these students possess that make them eligible to be leaders.

Then ask the class to vote - students have just one vote each. The results can be surprising if you spend time discussing characteristics required of a leader and the most useful and wise choices of student to make!

Plenary   Ask the winning nominee to make a brief speech, outlining how he/she will help the group get through this difficult time.

Lesson 9

Starter

Presentation: Lord of the Flies - show the opening title sequence of the 1963 film of Lord of the Flies ... Youtube video clip.

Main

Ask the students to make notes whilst watching the sequence, focusing on the aspects outlined in the presentation ..

  • What clues are we given about the social class of the characters involved and the time period in which the story is set?
  • How tone and mood are created through visual images and sound effects.
  • How the plot is conveyed to the audience.
Development

Feedback to the class. Ask the students to form groups of 4 and consider what, if they were making a modern-day version of the film, they would include in the opening title sequence.

Plenary   Feedback from the groups.

Lesson 10/11Lesson 6

Starter

Lessons 10 and 11 may need to be combined, owing to the length of time to read the first chapter and coverage of the material below, particularly when the students need to use PEE in their character examinations.

Presentation: Lord of the Flies - display the brief plot outline.

Main

Read the first chapter of 'Lord of the Flies' - teachers will need to photocopy the text as the book is still copyright protected and not legally available on the internet.

Development

Ask the students to examine in detail, Jack, Piggy and Ralph. For each character, compile all we learn about them, using quotations. Consider ..

  • Appearance
  • Personality
  • Social background
  • The way they treat others
  • The way others treat them

Discuss the idea of symbolism within the novel; ask the class in groups to think in particular about the conch shell and the fire signal. Use the presentation to clarify thinking.

Plenary   Feedback results to the class.
