Key terms Metaphor, simile, graphic imagery

Starter Reading of a lighthouse poem ... for example
The Lighthouse by Raymond Wilson

Development In pairs, students tackle the techniques of the poem by responding to tasks on the worksheet and filling in the boxes.

Secondary development

Teacher reads the poem On Drowning [an extract from Richard III by Shakespeare] and explains that this is a more graphic representation of sea-life. The students should use the following prompts to think about the poem [using the worksheet to prompt ideas].

- How is the graphic representation achieved?
- What are the techniques used?

Teacher lists the positive and negative words, and record ideas on board or flip chart.

Plenary

Teacher asks the students what they learned about sea and sea-life from the two poems, and to record their ideas - dangerous, comforting, relaxing, threatening etc.

Homework Students to write a postcard home about an experience by the sea [can be positive or negative opinion writing].
