Lesson 2 - The Flannan Isle Mystery

Starter

As individuals or collectively, students to search the internet for images of lighthouses in all weathers and to create a word bank which they record in exercise books.

   
Development

In groups of 3 or 4, students should assign a leader and a scribe.  They should read the poem Flannan Isle, 5 or 6 lines at a time. The scribe will record a dossier of known facts about the disappearance of the three lighthouse keepers [for example, there were three lighthouse keepers, a passing ship reported no light etc.]

   
Secondary development

Using the facts written down, each student should create a brief 'breaking news' bulletin for a television broadcast. They should begin with the words ... Last night concern was raised... and finish with – Further details as we receive them.

   
Extended plenary

Students should listen to some examples and focus on the role of a television newsreader. They should create a list of behaviours - fast, precise, serious tone etc.

   
Homework

Students should read the text of the telegram that was sent originally.
