Lesson 6 - Diary writing/writing logs

Lesson objectives

Understanding how and why logs are kept
Making notes

   
Starter

Teacher to introduce the idea of logs, diaries, record keeping, chronicles, annals etc. They are all forms of report writing. 

Teachnet to explain that lighthouse keepers would have kept a log.  Refer to the last entry recorded by the Flannan Isle lighthouse keepers.

   
Development

The students should read about the daily duties of lighthouse keepers and write a daily log.

They will need to consider the layout of a lighthouse and draw/label different areas. They shoudl refer to earlier 'Google' images of lighthouses.

Students should record a log of a typical day in a lighthouse, choosing 3 or 4 separate times. They should use clear and precise language
and consider note form.

   
Plenary

Students should listen to and appraise some examples [even if incomplete]

   
Homework Students should complete the log entries.
