A strategy for developing cross curricular resources
Consider some key music composition concepts that might have relevance in other subject areas. You might want to brainstorm this with fellow teachers or some of your students. For example structure, colour, pattern, texture, cycles, variation are all words we use in music which can also be found in other subject areas.
Here is an example. showing a few possible connections. Try adding to these by considering other musical concepts and other curriculum subject areas.

The next stage is to explore some units of work from other subject areas which might use some of the concepts you want to work with. Go to Exploring other subject areas to find out more.
Case Study
For our case study, we brainstormed some key music composition concepts that might have relevance in other subject areas. For example:
- structure
- colour
- pattern
- texture
- cycles
- variation
We explored some resource areas from other subject association websites and also looked at BBC Bitesize. Plenty to choose from, but for this workshop we chose to work with elements of Graph Theory in a musical context. The initial resources were based on materials from the Mathematical Association website resource 'Above and Beyond' |
