This Catch Phrase revision tool has been used successfully for students of high and low level abilities; however it needs to be used in slightly different ways. Ted Essex says ...

"After teaching the whole module to a a high ability class, the pertinent catch phrase is used at the end of revision session as an aide de memoire. The bright students soon solve the puzzle pictures and remember them on the following occasions they are used.

The low ability classes have no idea how to solve the puzzles at first but if you explain how the scientific word is made up then they remember the picture and link some of the information given about the word. It fires up their imagination and interest in science. Low ability students love to play and learn and it has certainly worked with the groups I teach and have taught in the past."

Ted has used the catch phrase model for the last six years and in the 2008/9 Teachnet programme, shared materials for four of the core Biology modules in the Edexcel 360 Science scheme. In 2009/10, Ted has contributed further revision materials for Biology, Chemistry and Physics ... plus some different approaches to revision using easily constructed detection games in Powerpoint!
